i thought all you would have to do is put 0.0.0.0 in the $mynetworks value so anyone can relay..... but its not working... i have to manually enter the actual network(205.205.5.0/24) i know setting this to 0.0.0.0 probably is not a good idea but what are the other options?

gwu,
Postfix is a safe server and built for security.
Running an open relay is really not an option for an
internet connected machine in this day and age unless
you really want to be used by spammers.

Therefore an open relay is hard to simulate
with postfix:

I believe that you do not really want an open relay.
I get the impression that you need to include the local
subnet 127.0.0.0/8, your lan subnet 205.x.x.x/24, and
then see the man entries for relay_domains for any
others.

i didnt mention that it does in fact work fine for the local subnet and and ipgange that i manually put in there. THe problem is that some of our clients or spread out over the country and use email from different ranges. How would i compensate for that. I couldnt possibly enter in an ip range every time someone drive to another state and wants to check there email! There are no other options?

is pop-before-smtp a good program?

Quoted from site:
"For those not familiar with pop-before-smtp: this program monitors the mail-log file on your system and temporarily enables SMTP access for the IP of POP/IMAP users that successfully check their email."

It's a perl script..you'd have to see how it performs under load, but it seems simple to use.

thats seems like its the best way...thanks!

one more question...

I setup virtual domains in the postfix server but sometimes when a user of the virtual domain sends an email...it sendsit as coming from the default orignal domain and not the virtual domain. Is Postfix supposed to change the domains on outgoing email? Or is that another function i have to setup?

thanks again
