In page box popup with image?

Hey everyone, I am currently working on my own portfolio site to display some of my artwork and I am stuck on how to display it.

I want to have the users click on the thumbnail of the artwork and then instead of just opening a new browser window fitted to the size, I would like to have it positioned in the same window, like an Absolute popup box, but is it posible to have it centered in the page and have the background that is not the new pop up become darkened so you can still see it but the user is focused just on the image?

I have seen this done before but i can not find any tutorials on how to do it. Thanks!
