Try clicking in the center of the top bar, and dragging the window to the left. This should "expose" the top-right-corner of the window that includes the "X".

Another method of closing, is to right-click on Excel on your Windows "taskbar" - at the bottom of the screen, and then choose "Close".
As as instructor, you should know that it is seldom productive to show a student every possible way to do something in Microsoft applications. Of course, there is nothing wrong with Alt+F4. But if you're going to be pedantic, why did you not include Alt-space-C? Or for that matter Ctrl-Alt-Delete-E? There are probably one or two more possibilities that haven't been listed yet.
Dale was just trying to help someone with a real-world problem by giving him a real-world solution, not a catalog of possible ways to close Excel.
cowhead: For the record, here is another trick to remember: Double-click on the top border of most any window to make it go full scren. If that still doesn't reveal the "X", then your monitor probably needs adjusting.
