Improve slow VPN performance.

Hi there. I have a VPN setup on Win SBS 2003 using the Remote Access functionality with PPPTP. Nothing fancy. The connection is a basic DSL line with 384K up. I've hosted a few things on lines of that speed, and they've always been reasonable for a few users (which is all that this is needed for), but this VPN is impractically slow.

If you try to open a 15K file using something like Excel, it will just sit there for almost a minute and then finally open it. Saving the file takes just as long. A third-party inventory software (with a database backend which resides on a network drive) also runs too slow to use (remotely). Even copying a file from a network drive to a local drive in Windows Explorer (while VPN'ing) takes incredibly long. So basically, everyone can connect using the VPN, but it's pretty much worthless because of how slow the connection is.

I'm looking for ideas on how to improve this. Someone had mentioned trying WINS, so I will check that out. And I know there are alternatives to using SBS/PPPTP (which I'm told isn't the fastest VPN method) but this is for a small company with just a few remote users, so a 20 thousand dollar Cisco Concentrator is out of the question. So, what are my options for speeding up my VPN?

Use RDP over VPN to connect to your server or to user's PC at the office.
