Hello,

I was looking into Impromptu Web reports and how they work in a client(Windows)/Server(Unix) environment.
Could someone please clarify this.

(A) I create the reports on Impromptu web reports windows) export these reports onto Upfront(Unix) and the user is then able to view the reports over the web with upfront.
I assume the Impromptu web reports can be created in the same manner as ordinary Impromptu Administrator reports.
Is the Catalog also required in upfront?

(B) Security can be accomplished with Access Manager, user classes and users together with SSL. The namespace has to be implemented in the Impromptu Web Catalog as well as setting up the namespace on LDAP on the server side.

(C) When a user access a report from the web, that report is then ran off the database and the results returned to the screen.

Thanks in advance

A- You create the reports in Impromptu Administrator (there is no IWR client) and then publish the Catalog and reports to IWR. Upfront is just the portal where the IWR provider resides. The catalog can NOT be viewed from Upfront, but must be present in the ReportSet.

B- This sounds about right.

C- Yes. By default it is run in pdf mode but you also have teh ability to run in xls, or xml as well. Each time you run the report it will run the query and produce a pdf report on the server.

Flex,

Thanks for that bit of Info, the docs on Cognos Web tend to beat about the bush abit. I assume you do the administration of the IWR with Server Administration Utility (Windows) which connect to the IWR server(UNIX).I was wondering if the user selects the report and the report
takes quite a few minutes to run, is this not a long time for the user to wait to get the data or maybe you can schedule the reports to run overnight and they get instance response to that pdf file that resulted from the overnight schedule and the report is not ran off the database at the specific time the user selects the report.

Thanks again

Canhe,
I can't help thinking that if you are thinking of scheduling reports to run at certain times, rather than on demand, then you don't really need IWR - a copy of Impromptu Admin would suffice.
If your reports take too long in the eyes of the users, yet they want fresh data and the reports can't be rewritten for speed, perhaps a datawarehouse/mart (if not used) may speed things up?

Hello Lex,

Thanks for the reply. I already have a datawarehouse and create cubes but I am a bit quite workwise at the moment so I am browsing what IWR can do.
I understand what you are saying and it makes sense. I was just thinking from the datawarehouse I have but I think for IWR the amount of data would
not be so large and the reports would run quite fast. So sorry for the misleading info in the previous post.

Hi Flex,

Not trying to get too technical on you here, but Impserver.exe is considered the IWR client....everything else sounds good

You can consider Impserver the client, BUT when I think client, I think of a component that can actually be installed stand-alone, like PowerPlay and PPES.
For the sake of semantics, let me rephrase my last posting and state that you can use either Impromptu admin OR Impserver.exe as the IWR client piece.
