Can it be done! The calculated field is removed after insertion by the product with no error. What am I doing wrong? Any good product lets you do this.

Betty

Thank you, guys for being there.

Betty,

Not sure what the error is that you are seeing. Inserting calculated columns in a header is a normal practice and works fine in all versions of Impromptu that I have used (ver 3 thru 7.1 MR2). Please give us a little more background on what you are doing and seeing in the product.

Dave,
Inserting calculated columns in a header. Maybe this is my problem. The process I do is:

insert
calculation
Draw the box in the header
select the calculation from the predefined calculation in the catalog folder
That brings up the catalog definitions and click ok
I receive the prompts for the year and period that is part of the calculation
key and click OK
return to the report and nothing is there.

No error! No results!

Really frustrating. Give me an error I have said more than once.

Betty,

The idea is to use the Expression Editor to create a calculated column using a combination of functions, operators, and report or catalog columns. The steps you indicated seem to show that you are pressing OK before you have defined your calculation.

Try this:

insert
calculation
Draw the box in the header
select Value from the available choices, then select Number. Change the zero to one. Then Press Okay and you should see a "calculated column" that is equal to one.

The insert calculation is just a shortcut combining the creation of a calculated column with positioning it within the report output. You could just as easily create the calcuation from within the Report|Query|Data menu screen using the calculation button in the center of the screen. After saving it (press OK) you could then drag it within the report to wherever you want it.

Does this help?

I think I didn't get my question right. I want to put a data element from the table in the page header

or
I have a filter that restricts the date range that will appear on the report. I want the end date (which is in a prompt) to appear in the page header.

Betty

:)

1st issue: Just drag or insert the data element into the header. Be aware though, that unless you set the scope of the header appropriately (in Header | Properties | Layout) this data will not change on subsequent pages.

2nd Issue: Just go to Insert | More Objects and look for Prompt Variables in the menu. Then select the prompt you want and insert it into the header. If you want to format a prompt date to other than the default, you will have to use it as a Query column first, then insert the query column.

Hope this helps,

Dave Griffin

I am prompting for a period which is a number and a year which is a number. Within the file those two variable equate to a date enddate which is in the same record on the table.

I need the enddate to be in the page header. Because of the range, I am getting all kinds of dates.

Does this make sense?

period =04
yr=2002

is actually fiscal year October, 2003

Clear as mud?

betty

Betty,

You typically do this by joining the fact table to another table that holds the month end date for each year and period. In the product I work with (Deltek Costpoint) it is the table ACCTING_PD. If your application does not have such a table you may still be able to calculate the period end date if it is consistent and rule-based.

Your are on the money.

The fiscal year and fiscal period are numeric fields that are contained in one table. I filter on these using a prompt to contain the range ending date that I need. I use the filter with a linked table (with balances) to contain my data info I need. This works.

I want to insert in the page header the fiscal year and fiscal period equivalent in date format which fortunately this field exists in the same table.

Thank you for hanging in there.

Clear yet. I know you know how. I know I don't.

Thank you,

Betty :)

I found the solution.

Thank you for staying with me.

I gave you a star.
