Impromptu "crashing" when trying to convert to crosstab

I am using Cognos Impromptu version 7.1.339.0 and have created a simple list report that I need to convert to a crosstab report.

When I need to make modifications, I go back to my original simple report and make the changes (to sorting, grouping, etc), save that, then save it as the crosstab version. Then, working with the crosstab version, I attempt to convert it to a crosstab report.

Sometimes it converts ok, but most of the time, it "crashes" and closes Impromptu. I have rebooted (cold boot) but am wondering whether the machine I use has enough memory or resources for what I need to do. Below is the system info for my machine:

OS: MS Windows 2000 Professional
System Type: X86-based PC
Processor: x86 Family 6 Model 8 Stepping 6 GenuineIntel ~863 ...
BIOS Version 10/31/00
total physical memory: 194,864 KB
Available physical memory: 50,132 KB
Total Virtual Memory: 338,996 KB
Page File Space: 467,516 KB

Can anyone advise me? It may be possible to get a better PC, but I need some information first.

Thank-you in advance

I had this problem when I first started using crosstabs.

I asked the same question on these forums and the advise I got was if you use crosstabs expect crashes, u can check the archives.

So I've gone away from using crosstabs, mostly using formulas to create the columns, it's more time consuming but it's always stable.

Thanks Bruce - can you steer me in the direction of some help using formulas to create columns? I would appreciate it!

I'm not sure if there is any help about ii, so here goes.

Say you've got a report that has a field that has possible values A, B, and C, and you want a crosstab showing a count for your groupings with a column for A, B, and C.

You create 3 calculations:
One called A: if (field = 'A') then (1) else (0)
One called B: if (field = 'B') then (1) else (0)
One called C: if (field = 'C') then (1) else (0)

Then you just add up the counts according to your groupings and format as if a crosstab.
