This is somewhat problematic. The only thing I can think of is to make the column a calculated column and leave it dynamically sized horizontally. In the calculation give a result of NULL where you want to shrink the size and not show it in the report. This would do what you want functionally, but you may still have to deal with some cosmetic issues.
