I've tried in simple list reports to take away the borders around the data. Is there a way to do this? I've tried using format, borders, and none. That does not seem to work.

Please look at sample report:

Select an item in the list, then from the edit menu, select parent. At that point, you can format the selected item and remove the border.

If the border is around the page and not around the list frame, select the data item, then choose select parent TWICE. Then remove the border.

The border around a list frame is technically called a grid. Select the list frame by clicking on a data column within and press ctrl-L. Then right-click and select Format. A tab called Grid is added to the options. With this you can fine tune the border lines with the list frame.

Hope this helps,
