Hi,
I have originally made a flyer for a company completely set up in Photoshop. Now the customer wants the same flyer translated into Spanish - they have sent it to a translation service and the translation service has sent it to me as a Word Document. (Text Only)
What I need to know is can I open my background ONLY Into Indesign, then import the Word Document into Indesign on a transparent background?? I tried to do that by creating a new layer and putting it on a new layer, but I was doing something wrong, because I couldn't view both layers, only the first layer, even if I moved the layers around. I'm only familiar with Photoshop, not Indesign as you can tell! But I thought it may handle the Word Document text better than Photoshop. ANY HELP WOULD SURE BE APPRECIATED!!

graphicgirl,

In Photoshop, turn your text layers off and resave the file. Place the .psd file in InDesign. Lock the layer it's on. Then create a new layer, and place the new text on that new layer.

ID's layers are similar in that you can view and lock the layers selectively.

Should be easy if I understand you correctly.

Hi AdobeTim!
Thanks for helping me out! Once I create that new layer, I've tried to go to "place" and then I try to open the Word file, but once I do that - I don't see the text file - does locking the first layer take care of the problem, or am I doing something else wrong? I'm just used to working with layers in Photoshop, but InDesign has gotten me totally confused! :) Is there an option/preference to bring imported files in on a transparent background?

I work with layers all the time & have had no problems such as you describe. I take it that the little eye symbol is showing on both layers. The text layer should be at the top of the list for it to show.

How are you placing the text? Are you creating a text box to place the type in or just going "command D"?

If you are creating a text box, it's possible that it has a fill of white which is covering the background photo. Touch the text box with the black arrow & then go to the swatches palette and make sure the fill is set to "none".

When you "place" the word file, once the text is imported, a little page symbol should appear where your cursor is. If you click anywhere on the page, the text should appear in a transparent text frame.
