i have received a cd which contains the data files of a since obsolete mssql db. Is it possible to import these files into access so i can read the data? some advice would be much appreciated.

sql server vs 7.0
file extensions are .ldf and .mdf

any thoughts terry?

I believe to import SQL server data into Access you need to use an ODBC connection. That means you will need to have a running SQL server to connect to in order to get the data.

If you have SQL Server available, you can attach those files to SQL 7 or 2000 and then export from SQL to Access or Import to Access from SQL. However, Access can not read those files directly to import the objects and data. SQL must interpret them first. I haven't tried attaching a database to MSDE. That might work, also.

See sp_attachdb in SQL BOL to learn how to attach the files. Terry

So are you saying the files are no help to me. As far as i know the server is not online so i wouldn't be able to connect to it. Is there any way i could create a csv from the sql data files?

Can i install an evaluation copy of sql server on windows 2000? How easy is it to then access these files. Will i need the db schema that held the data or is it contained within these .ldf and .mdf files.

You can't read the files without SQL Server.

You can install the evaluation copy of SQL Server on Win 2000.

The schema, all objects and data are contained in the MDF file. The LDF file is the transaction log file. Terry
