Importing raster files (.bmp)

I am running AutoCAD LT 2004 on Windows XP Profesional.

Is there any way to import raster files into AutoCAD LT 2004, in the original (.bmp) format.

If not, is it possible to convert the .bmp file into an acceptable format i.e. .dxf. I have tried a couple of conversion tools with little luck, either getting error messages or a loss of data.
