Importing numeric data to Excel but shows as characters

I have an SQL table of data fields some char some numeric (12,2)format. When using data transformation task to import into the excel spreadsheet the numeric data will SOMTIMES load as character data that can NOT be summed. I have tried formating the numeric excel columns using general, accounting, numbers, etc in the spreadsheet prior to the import with no luck. How do you get numeric data to be imported as numeric that can be accumulated and character as character? I think the problem might be with the transformation definitions but not sure. Any help would appreciated.
