If I create links in an Illustrator file will the links be preserved if i bring it into indesign?

Theoreticalyl, yes. If you "edit original" from the links window it will open the Ai doc and that doc will have its links.

A problem could arise if you package up the INDD thing to send to the printer. I don't think that INDD will gather the files linked to the AI (doc). You could try by placing tha AI doc in a new INDD doc and hit "package" as an experiment.

If you are sending out a pdf you won't have a problem.

Using OSX 10.3.9 on a G4

...jmgalvin is correct, indesign won't package images linked inside .ai files...

...links in illustrator are preserved upon printing and exporting from indesign...

...you can embed images in illustrator and unembed those already embedded images if required back to a linked state...

...i have also had success at printing or exporting from indesign with the link actually missing from the .ai file (a scenario whereby the image has been imported to illustrator, saved as .ai (pdf), then the image has been deleted or moved), ensure you save from illustrator with pdf compatability when using .ai in indesign...
