At work I have PM 6.5 and Ill 8.0, they're a little behind. I'm only a step up at home with PM 7.0 and Ill 9.0. All day at work I create logos and desings in Illustrator, save them as an eps and import them into PageMaker and they come out nice and clean. At home I go through the same routine and they look terrible. Am I overlooking something in the newer version of each. Even if I save it as version 8.0 it doesn't help.

Do they print OK?

Typically, EPS files carry a low resolution TIF header which provides an on-screen preview when placed in PageMaker. Remember that what you are seeing is essentially a placeholder that represents the EPS. Regardless of on-screen appearance, your EPS will output perfectly to a PostScript laser printer, or to whatever output device your commercial printer or service bureau will be using.

While this rough, pixelated image may seem disconcerting at first, I assure you that with time you do get used to using them. To assist in precision placement, use guides with "snap to guides" turned on.

That said, you can force PageMaker to create its own higher-resolution EPS preview. Check the "Show Filter Preferences" checkbox in the Place dialog. This will bring up a new dialog in which you can specify the resolution of the preview up to 300 dpi. I find that as low as 150 dpi is adequate to provide a decent on-screen preview. Bear in mind that you are generating additional image data that your PageMaker file has to carry. Doing this excessively can lead to a bloating file.

There's something I'm missing. Maybe the two programs just don't mix. When I save the Illustrator file as 8 it comes out clean but leaves a white box around the image. Saved in 9 the white box is gone but the image loses its quality. All is good if I don't use a background. And all this is even more apparent once printed.
I would love to play with the creative suite, but can't afford it yet.

Are you talking about what you see on the screen or the printed output?

I never knew this and got quite excited about the possibility. BUT I was very disappointed to see the onscreen preview was no better when I tried as suggested (even up to 300 dpi) than how it appeared doing it without showing filter preferences. Am I missing something?

Hi, Lyn,

The issue is that PM will generate a preview when there isn't one.

If you want a sharp preview on screen which will print on a non-PS printer, it's possible to save the EPS in Illustrator as Windows Metafile and then combine the EPS and WMF as a preview using Steve Rindsberg's utility to "marry" the two.

Oh.

(How do you do that quote thing? or have I asked you before?)

I always specify a preview when saving an EPS out of Illustrator, so that I am used to seeing one anyway. The problem may have been that i was trying to read the preview of a fairly complex EPS with a lot of smallish text. I think I was hoping for too much.

I am also aware that in CorelDraw, you can specify that the EPS preview is in WMF format, which means of course that when printed on a non-ps printer, you still get a reasonable printout of the EPS. I presume that this works in a similar way to the way Steve's would work.

Hi, Lyn,

Yes, creating a WMF preview when saving an EPS in AI or CD is an option, which appear better on the screen and print well on PCL printers.

I was offering alternatives to change the preview or create one where there wasn't one.
