Importing Flash into After Effects - transparency? masks?

Forwarding a question from someone I work with. I know Flash and Director, but next to nothing about After-Effects.

If I were to animate, say, some type or graphics in Flash, would someone be able to import the resulting .swf file into After Effects with the background transparency (and/or mask effects) intact? Is this even a good way to create animated type and/or flat graphic animations using After Effects?
