I need to import a very large file into an Access database. I am using the file to create the table. One of the fields contains a number that is very long and will only import it as scientific notation. No matter what I do with the .csv file or the format of the field in Access it will not import it correctly. I have tried to create a .xls as well but that hasn't worked either. Also, I really can't open it in excel anyway because it cuts off over 6,000 records because the file has to many records in it.

Does anyone have any tips on this?

Thanks

How long are the numbers? What data type did you use? Is a text field an option for you?

The length of the field is 20, the datatype is just general as far as the .csv file goes. Text will work for me, but the only solution I could find was to add single quote in front of the number. However it then imports with the single quote and then I can't get the tables to relate.

Thanks

You can import into an existing table or you can use an import specification. To create a specification, import the file manually and choose Advanced before you finish the import. This will allow you to change the field types. The import specifcation can be saved and used with coded or manual imports.

You stated "import it as scientific notation" I'm not aware there is a "scientific notation" data type in Access.

What is the data type? What happens if you view the data in a form or report with Standard format?

Don't get confused by format vs data type. They aren't the same.

Thanks for all the information. I was able to get the files imported without having to use excel. I don't think I made the problem I was having very clear above. But none the less, I got it worked out.
