Importing CAD drawings into 3d studio???

I'm working on a digital model of a building in Autocad, but i want to render it in 3d studio max, i'm not familiar with the package, every time i try to import a building it crashes the system, is this normal or is there an easy way to do it?

Seperate the model into several different files and import them one at a time saving in between each import.
