importing a word table into Pagemaker 7 1

I have been asked to convert a book from word to pagemaker 7. It has a lot of tables that are getting totally messed up!!!! Is there something I am doing wrong or does Pagemaker not like a table from word?
Would it work better in Indesign? Is indesign more word document friendly?There is no way that I want to rewrite 100 tables from a word document into Pagemaker.
