I have the windows server 2003 control, redo and tablespace files for a database created by others.

I also have the pfile for said database.

I have copied the files to my server. How can I I connect to this database and start it up. I have altered the pfile control file locations to reflect the new location of the files, but can connect, even with an entry in TNSNAMES.ORA.

I can't connect as sys, so I can't issue a startup command.

Any ideas?

Grinding away at things Oracular

John,

I presume from your post that you are trying to get this Oracle instance running on Windows. If that is the case, then you must first ensure that the user with which you have logged into Windows is a member of the ORA_DBA group. Can you please confirm that.

Next, Windows requires a Windows Service. Have you created such a service using the Oracle oradim utility?
Code:
oradim -new -sid <your instance SID> -intpwd <SYS/internal password> -startmode auto -pfile <fully qualified name of pfile>
Once you have confirmed that your o/s user is a member of that group, and you have confirmed the existance and the successful startup of the Oracle Service, then go to a command prompt and tell us the response(s) to the following two commands:
Code:
<o/s prompt>: \sqlplus /nolog
SQL> connect / as sysdba
Let us know your findings.
