my client emailed me an Illustrator 6 eps that needed to be modified. i did this, in Illustrator 8, and saved the file as an EPS with a CMYK, 9-bit Macintosh preview (the file is actually just black). I tried importing it into Quark (i use 4.1) and it was dandy. i emailed it to my client, who doesn't have a copy of Illustrator at all, so they placed it in Quark (3.3) to view my work. HOWEVER, they got the grey box that says "Postscript Picture" instead. I tried saving for them as Illustrator 6 or 7 eps files, and even with 1-bit previews, just for kicks, and these mostly worked on my machine, but when i emailed them to the client, nada. all grey boxes. i know i've encountered and presumably solved this problem myself, in the past, but what i really want to know, IS WHAT IS GOING ON? what causes it? how to avoid it? is it something to do with email compression (i use apple double) or the quark 4-3 issue? if anyone can explain this whole grey box thing to me, i'd be EVER SO HAPPY! It is likely to be a memory issue. The other machine may not have enough free to render the picture. It should print fine though.
