Looking to the future we are thinking about setting up a Linux fileserver and a few workstations to use Ubuntu (no particular reason for this distro) so a couple of us can get some practice supporting them.

I'm new to Linux but have a few months to get the hang of the basics. What i'd like to know is what would you consider to be the best skills to start with i.e. tools that would be used for managing basic file and print services and a few desktops.
I'm really looking for a starting point and maybe a good book recommendation or two.

Thanks.

I'll start with some recommendation.
Web-sites:

Books:
(free download, old but good)

Podcasts:
(higly recommended)

As with the "tools for managing..." you'll find most if not all are inkluded in the OS.
The books that I linked to show you how to use most of them.
And as always, Google is full of howto's. You just have to sort out the good ones.
:)

Nice one i'll take a look at the links as always google presents information overload so it's nice to get some recommendations. The Linux Administration Handbook look like it could be worth a place on the book shelf.

Cheers.

There's also a "Hardening Linux" series which I think would be useful... It's a fairly technical read on how system crackers try to get in, but I mention it because it goes a long way towards emphasizing best practices for system configuration and administration.

Probably a good read later in your journey, but I really urge you to make time for it.

The book is structured by function/service/daemon so you'd be able to read it as a reference manual in little bites when you need it.
