import .xls into calendar

Hello,

I have an .xls file of birthday names and dates I would like to import into an existing calendar. How would I accomplish this? Would I create a custom column then add column from site columns?

Create a calendar list in sharepoint
Create a list view in sharepoint where the columns are in the same order of the xls files
Cut & paste
