Import text files with non-standard file extensions

Is it possible to import text files which do not have regular file extensions (csv,txt etc) without renaming first?
I'm trying to import the text file testfile.xyz and 'xyz' is clearly not recognizable as a file extension. Is is not possible to 'import as ....'?
