Ok, here goes.

Earlier I posted a problem with importing a text file into Paradox and have since found the problem. However I still don't know how to overcome the problem and it is slowly driving me insane.

Each of my fields in the master table is defined as either a number, short etc.. but the text file only recognises the importing fields as data type alpha. This means that the script obtained from the text expert does not work as errors occur. I want to keep my field values but I also want to import text files into it! Any ideas anyone?!

Cheers,

Woody.

Woody,

Could be several things at this point. What happens if you import the text file into a copy of your table using the interactive Import? Does Paradox bring in the data properly?

If so, then it's possible that some changes are needed in the script.

If the values still aren't recognized properly, then it's possible that the data file needs to be restructured.

Check it out and post your results.

If you saved the script from the expert, did you check the 'all fields' radio button? The default is 'text'.

If you are importing a comma delimited file, how the data is formated dictates how Pdox treats the data.

For example, if the text file has this data:
"ABC",12,"99"

When imported into Pdox,
"ABC" has a field type of A
12 has a field type of S
"99" has a field type of A

If you want to Pdox to treat the number as number, make sure there are no quotes around the value.

In this case, 12 is treated as a number while 99 is treat as text.

Open the import script and see how the table is set up. Look for tCreate = create table name
with field1 : field type,
...

Check the field type to make sure they are the correct field types.
