I've been trying to get this to work all day and hope someone out there has an answer.

I'm trying to edit the .dbf file that comes with the ESRI shapefile format. The official documentation says it's a dBASE file, but I can't seem to import it into sql server 2000, regarless of the version.

The documentation is here (page 29), if it's any help:

I've tried everything I can think of but DTS can't seem to recognise the file properly. I'm guessing I havn't set the data source correctly, but I have no idea what else to try.

Many Thanks!

I think there is a special driver you need for dBase files. ex. I currently only have dBase 5 driver enabled. Do you have the proper driver installed?

If that doesn't work, I'm wondering about two other options-

1. Can you set it up as an ODBC connection?
2. Can you use MS Access to set up the dbf as a linked table, then import from there?

Sorry I can't be of more help, but hope this will get you started.

Ok, I've got it!

To do this, you need the BDE (Borland Database Engine). Now, this is not availbale for download from Borland, but if you have delphi, C builder or have installed sofware that uses this tool, you will have it. I'm working on a machine that doesn't have much of anything installed on it, so where to find this tool?

I found the answer in thread102-924347 where a link to a .dbf interaction tool is available that also installs the BDE. It worked like a charm!

Thanks!
