Hi,
I'm trying to understand what is required in order to set up redundant links between a teamed nic on a server -> 2 nortel 5510 switches. From what i've read I need to implement SMLT on the port of each switch and ICT between the switches. In theory makes sense.
Currently both switches are in use, STP is being used also. My query is if I want to implement ICT does this mean that STP has to be disabled for the whole switch or just the ports I designate as ICT links. I also noted that using separate vlans for the SMLT was mentioned, is it necessary?

I'd be greatful for any tips or guidance on this. I don't think its the most complicated setup but wanted to know that if I make changes to the switch settings by adding ICT will it affect current operations.

thanks.

From memory, the switch should be smart enough to disable STP all by itself on the ports you assign to the SMLT, if not, you should definitely do it yourself.

I can see why somebody would recommend a seperate VLAN to do this - why not? The 55x0 can support something like 4000 VLANs I think, so you're not likely to run out.

SMLT will activly used all links from a teamed server NIC.

You define the trunk between the 5500's as an IST.
Setup a vlan with just these ports in. This allows the switches to sync their fwd tables.
Define the NIC ports on the server in a trunk and plug one into each of the switches.
Define an SMLT on both switches with the server ports in. You just use your normal data vlans for these.

This allows both links from the server to be used at the same time doubling your bandwidth.

STP is disabled on ports by default when you enable SMLT, as SMLT removes the need for STP.

You will also need the Advanced IP licence to use SMLT.

If you want a redundant link to the servder stick with STP.

Thanks guys - i'm still pursing the dual nic setup for hyper-v on R2 and if I can get that to work I may not need to reconfigure the switches. When I get to that point i'll check in again with what I find.
