Implementing MRTG 2.9.10 on HP-UX 10.20

Having successfully implemented MRTG 2.8.12 from .depot packages on HP-UX 10.20 I would like to upgrade to 2.9.10 which is only available as source and hence has to be configured, made etc.

Can anyone give me tips on how dificult this is going to be, and how to safely run the two versions side by side?

Has anyone successfully done this on HP-UX 10.20 with MRTG 2.9.10?

I already have all of the pre-requisite libraries for MRTG such as GCC, LIBPNG etc on the system.

There really is no problem installing MRTG from scratch - just follow the install doc's carefully. The only problem you may have running them side by side is having two mrtg's running at the same time. MRTG will fail if it finds a lock file for a running mrtg. If you configure it to use different directories for configs / lock files from the old version you should be able to get around this - but MRTG locks the process for a reason, so you may not want to do it.
Perhaps take a copy of your crontab with the old version of MRTG then change to use the new one. If you get any problems just restore the old crontab.
