Implementing ADAM on remote servers

We have one parent domain and all DCs are located at the corporate office. All of our remote sites are connected back to the corporate office via our MPLS. Last week the T1 to one of our remote sites had a circuit issue and as a result no one could access anything on the local file server, print server, etc as they could not be authenticated. We would like a way to prevent any issues like that in the future and I was researching for possible solutions. I came across ADAM and thought it might be possible to configure that on each of the remote servers to sync AD rather than making each of them a separate DC. Please let me know if this is a good solution or if it is even possible. Thanks for any help provided.

Eric is right. Put up DCs in the branches, and make them GCs. You could install DFS on those servers and get better performance for file access, while still maintaining the ability to back everything up at the main office.

Plan for performance, and capacity takes care of itself. Plan for capacity, and suffer poor performance.

Thanks. I am not really optimistic about ADAM as a replacement to DCs at the remote sites, but if we went that route would it work as I am hoping? Thanks again for your help.

ADAM wouldn't do authentication like a DC. It's more used for things like Edge Transport syncronization for Exchange 2007.

You need DCs that are GCs.

ryrare,

Pat Richard is right. ADAM is used to replicate application data (can be used to replicate a custom apps) and it's not intended to authenticate users in any way.

As UTechnical said: your best bet is a DC/GC in the remote site.

Michael

Sounds good. I will just dcpromo each of our remote site servers. Thanks for your help.

You need to think about your sites and services setup;

If there are no stupid questions, then what kind of questions do stupid people ask? Do they get smart just in time to ask questions?

pagy,

Can you let me know what I will need to look at and plan for prior to making the remote sites DCs/GCs? What in sites and Services will I need to configure/modify? I am assuming that I will have to add subnets, etc, but I am not sure of all the steps I will need to follow. Thanks for any help.
