I have two servers a domain controller (which contains the physical tape drive) and and Exchange 2000 server. Both the domain controller and the member server are Windows 2000. The domain controller has ARCServe 2000 Advanced Edition,AS2000 Advance Edition Disaster Recovery Option, AS2000 Advanced Edition Backup Agent for Open Files for NT/2000 installed. This all works perfectly. Our consultant also had us purchase and additional AS2000 Advanced Edition Backup Agent for Open Files and AS2000 Backup Agent for Microsoft Exchange. This is where I get confused. Are they installed on the Exchange 2000 server and AS 2000 Advanced Edition will just connect to these agents? Anyone who could help, thank you in advance.

Yes Bill, hole in one. You install the exchange agent on the exchange server (exchange setup is a bit tricky, make sure you follow the documentation to the letter) and the open file agent on the exchange server as well. Then ARCserve will simply connect to it via the client agent. By the way, you get 5 free client agents upon purchase of Advanced Edition.

Good luck,

to summarize, youy setup is:

PDC (ARCserve Manager)
ARCServe 2000 Advanced Edition
Disaster Recovery Option
Backup Agent for Open Files

Exchange server
Client Agent for NT/2000 (free)
Backup Agent for Open Files*
Backup Agent for Microsoft Exchange

the exchange agent will backup your mail system 'on-line' and up to bricks-level. you could do away with the ofa* though, that is if your concern only is the exchange, but if not, then i highly recommend it.

correction on 'brick-level', it only applies on exchange 6.5, not on 7 or 2000.
