I am running exchange 5.5 sp4 on nt4 server sp6. An IMC is running with some custom routes to other smtp servers that are sitting inside the network (set up on the routing tab of the IMC). One of the routes is 172.19.10.11 which can be pinged (There are no connectivity issues to this IP).

Our Isp advised us of a new IP to deliver mail to. I subsequently made the change in the connections tab and ok'ed, receiving, of course, the usual message about restarting the service. stopped the service and tried to restart only to get error '2140 an internal windows NT error has occurred'. tried a reboot and got the same thing. Checked disk space - no problems there

Had a look at the application event log

After the 'Trying to start IMC' message I get these 4 messages (No 4 appears twice)

1) Unable to resolve a delivery route. The route for [172.19.10.11] lists [172.19.10.11] as the target host, but the address for [172.19.10.11] could not be resolved

2) Unable to resolve the delivery route [172.19.10.11];[172.19.10.11];0. Since errors in delivery routing parameters can result in misrouted mail, the Internet Mail Service will not start until this error is corrected. Confirm that DNS is properly configured. If you are using a HOSTS file, confirm that it is properly configured.

3) Unable to start the delivery manager. No messages will be delivered

4) The library file "jnfoctrs.dll" specified for the "JnfoComm" service could not be opened. Performance data for this service will not be available. Status code is data DWORD 0.

Every time I attempt to start the service I get excatly the same series of events

Some further details:

The DNS servers are all functioning fine, servers and workstations

The SMTP server on 172.19.10.11 is up (can telnet on port 25)

We are experiencing no other networking issues at the moment

All of the routing tables have been checked over and everything is in order

Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated

Thankyou
Gary

Can you ping -a 172.19.10.11 ?

If not you don't have reverse lookup on DNS. Can't recall if that is a problem or not but still best to set it up. Dan
