I am having a problem getting external e-mail sent - i am able to get inbound but any mail sent just sits in the queue (under the internet mail service) if i restart the server the queued messages send but almost immediately any new mail just sits there again. Restarting the internet mail service does not help neither does restarting all of the Exchange services only a full reboot. The logs shows a problem with DNS contacting the host domain ie. hotmail.com - yet if i do NSLOOKUP or ping the domain it works fine so it seems that there is not a problem.

Exchange 5.5 SP$ on NT4 Server

cheers

Make sure you have IMC configured to use your dns. Have you checked your logs? What are you getting there?

there doesn't seem to be any problems with DNS server there is nothing in the log showing errors and the exchange server is set to send via DNS. NSLookup works on both the exchange server and the DNS server. But the exchange server is showing DNS problems saying it can't find the host domains - i have tried opening telnet on either side of the firewall to the exchange server. From outside coming in it can't connect, have been able to in the past. Inside going out can't connect to another exchange server, yet mail is able to come in.
