IMAP4 being very slow

I've had this problem for some time now, but am just gettign around to posting about it.

On all my computers, when I change folders in outlook (or what ever IMAP4 client I'm using) it has to recreate the cache of messages. It doesnt do this on other servers that use imail, or mailsite (the other server I've tested against)
Does anyone have any ideas? I think it may be the hard ware I'm running (cerlon 500 with 1/2 gig of ram, a small server for my family and me)

update: Moved imail from the cerlon to a AMD 700mhz with 1 gig of ram, seems to be moving a little faster. I had a few memory dumps in the begining but it looks like it's stabled out. I haven't had a chance to go through the mem dump file but I will next time it crashes.
