Hi all,
First question!

I've got a problem/few questions regarding IMAP.

I've got a Macbook Air at home and i wish to connect to my server at work running SBS 2003. I can connect and access shares/remote desktop etc everything fine. The problem starts when i try and use email.

Basically i want to use Thunderbird to connect to my server using IMAP, so i can access my email from anywhere and there always be kept a copy on the server. This i can do and have accomplished.

However, when i have to specify an SMTP server to be able to send email (i gather that IMAP is only to receive) it asks me for my SMTP server. Now i can VPN in to my server and use the SMTP server my server uses to send email which is my works ISP SMTP server. This works (it sends email out) however when i recieve the email at the other end (i've been testing the system by sending email out from my work email address i.e. the email address im setting up for IMAP) i try to reply to it and it just spits it back at me and gives me a 550 SMTP error message. I believe this error is something like 'you cannot use this server as a relay'.

So it appears i can't 'tunnel' through to my server to use it's SMTP setup.

Or i can setup my ISP's SMTP server, the one i use for home. However, the point of my new Macbook Air is so that i can travel about. If i'm in a completely different location, i can't very well setup the SMTP server for every different random ISP i have to be connected to at the time.

I swear i'm onto something with the whole VPN route i just don't know why whenever i try and reply to an email i've sent out, it spits it back at me giving me a SMTP 550 error.

Isn't using VPN basically what you do when you log-in using remote web workplace and access your email via Outlook Web Access?

If any one could shed any light or need more information, please let me know.

Any help much appreciated,
Jack.
