IMAP - Possible security risks? 1

I have a user who is requesting IMAP access to their exchange mailbox (I use exchange server 5.5). What are the possible security risks of doing this? I have taken steps to prevent relaying in Exchange Server 5.5.

Is there a better way to allow access from this user's home other than POP3 or IMAP?

IMAP is clear text.

All of the information would be sent across the internet unencrypted.
