IMAP in outlook 2010

Hi all

So after years of using POP3 I finally thought it time to move to IMAP so I could read new email on my phone etc rather than waiting to get home to my PC that checks POP3 every minute (removing it from the server)

Turns out this seems impossible. My email host has a 400m limit. I got a fair way through that in just 1 week of being away and email downtime. My plan all along was to archive anything older than say 2 weeks to my local PST file which is where all my POP3 has been downloading to for years.

However since using IMAP in Outlook 2010 (was on 2007 before) I've found these problems :

Images don't donwload in HTML emails even when sender is added to safe senders list or when you select to download pictures - it tells you to view it in a browser instead?

When autoarchive runs (setup on each IMAP folder individually under properties) it either erros saying the PST folder equivilient has mismatched items (both are mails, but apparently if downloaded from POP3 originally they count as different somehow??) or it gives no error but the old email remains in the IMAP folder and not in the PST folder - even if I let it make a new PST for the job!

I'm not sure what to do at this point other than give up and go back to POP3, orrrr manually select then drag & drop all old email to the PST file within outlook all the time (wow that's fun use of time ...)

Any ideas anyone?

I've seen numerous issues with IMAP on Outlook 2010 & 2013. Personally I would never use it. You could stick with POP and choose the "leave on server" option so that your phone will be able to view the emails. They will not be removed from the server.

The problem with leaving on server is you then keep downloading them as far as I'm aware. Even if not you'd end up with split personality disorder with some email in one/both locations and others not. I've never opted to turn that on for that reason.
I can't believe the most common and probably powerful email client could have such issues with what is most likely the most common form of email nowadays since so many people use free webmail and hook into it via IMAP on all their devices (which is fine if there is no space limit ...)

So what is the realistic option for someone with a size limited mailbox who wants remote access (or just more than 1 device) that doesn't end up with fractured accounts and duplicates and that kind of nitemare? The amount of spam I get makes managing it without good junk filters quite painful

If you use one POP3 client on one machine and leave messages on the server you will not keep downloading the messages.

There are some events that will trigger previously downloaded messages to be downloaded again;

One is deleting and recreating the POP account in the client, another is changing the mail delivery agent on the server, (Dovecot to Courier for instance), changing the server time zone is a third. Other than that it will only be newer (than the last collection) messages that will be fetched on request.

Huh?????
People choose to work using whatever suits them best.

Plus
If you create a folder structure over IMAP it will not replicate to POP3.
If you create a folder structure using POP3 it will be client side only and will not replicate to the server

IMAP only downloads headers and text so does not download attachments or images until you read the message or open the attachment, POP3 does.

if you delete a message over IMAP, it will not be downloaded over POP.

If you 'move' a message with IMAP it will not be downloaded over POP

Messages sent from an IMAP client will not appear in a POP3 client "Sent items" folder.

Once a message is "removed from server" by a POP connected client the will "unavailable" by an IMAP client.

Absolutely. Which is why this disjointed approach would end up with 2 setups of folders/emails being managed and seems totally untennable.
All I wanted was a bunch of folders/emails available online/various devices, and then a way to archive that structure and move the older emails, and store it locally.
I don't see why this isn't what most people want assuming they can't have infinite space on their IMAP? So far the only way I see it being doable is to manually move old emails from the IMAP folders to a local store every so often - this seems pretty archaic

Also I've just finished sorting yet more OL2010 problems - this time images not showing up - final solutionw as rollback to IE9 cos IE10/11 break the tempnetfiles somehow with the size option stuck at 0 so OL2010 can't show iamges as it can't save them to tempnetfiles. Weird. I'm sure I was on IE10/11 before my format and had no problem.
