Any reason why you couldn't use IMAP for an email account on your mobile devices but leave your home desktop set to POP? The logic would be they only want to see new messages on mobile devices and leave them in the mailbox if they want them downloaded at home via POP. If they delete the message on the mobile device, they wouldn't have to deal with it again at home.

This is for someone else that likes the idea of having a central (home) computer that has all the important email and is backed up.

None at all, other than if you download the messages via POP you lose the historical aspect of 'threads' when using IMAP, and you cannot 'see' sent items from IMAP in the "sent" messages on your 'home' mail client.

Right - I knew that, but the focus is not having to re-process emails on the "main machine".
