Image visible in navigator window, but not main window

I have a user the is using Abode FrameMaker6 and Illustrator9 (latest patches applied to both) on an NT4 workstation. When he double-clicks an image in FrameMaker, it launches Illustrator. Sometimes the image is visible in the navigator window but not in the main window.

Has anybody experienced this problem? Is there a cause or fix?

(NB. I have posted this in the Illustrator section too)
