Image Files Corrupted

I am using Win 98. Just lately some of my image files on my hard drive have been changed from (jpg) format to a much smaller unreadable vbs file. I am perplexed as to why this has happened. Anyone with a similar experience and possibly knows a fix for this would be great to allow viewing again of needed digital images.
