I use illustrator quite a lot to create adverts / logos etc. and am pretty much self taught and thus probably not what you would call an advanced user!

The problem I have relates to placing an image onto a background - if the image is too large for the backgound (thus hangs outside the black box) I cover it by placing a white box over the top - how do I just cut the unwanted section away, without distorting the proportions by resizing?

I've searched the help files to no avail - probably the answer to this is too simple! Requires some thinking outside the box, boom, boom! Thanks in advance
 
You can either use a clipping mask or create a crop mark that will hide the exceeding areas when you save to another format, i.e. GIF, JPG, PDF...
 
you will still have the portion of the image that's outside your clipping area. CorelDraw (ew!) can clip a bitmap to an irregular shape, and get rid of the non-visible portion; can CS3? I'm most familiar with AIv10 and somewhat with CS2
