I want to consolidate a number of images on a number of tapes and consolidate them to a single tape to free up media, what is the best procedure for this?

You could try duplicating the images to a new pool of tapes. You would then have to expire the old images. Make sure that you set a differant expire date on the new copies.

Considerations

Are they the same retention?
NetBackup by default does not allow mixing images of differing retention on the same tape

Are they from the same media server?
NetBackup by default requires the originating backup media server to also be the restore media server

Do you have vault license?
This is a simple procedure with vaulting

Do you have lotsa disk space?
You could restore to a staging area and then backup the data anew.
