Ok, I have a computer here that I cannot connect to the internet with. The problem was with the aol parental controls. The person's computer I have forgot his password for it so I uninstalled it. I can connect wirelessly to the access point with no problem, but web pages will still not show. I completely removed anything to do with aol, at least I think I did. I still cannot view pages or do anything with the internet. On a whim I reinstalled aol and when I go to sign on it actually connects and verifies username and password and then when the browser opens up, it says page cannot be viewed. I tried internet explorer, firefox, etc. No luck. Like I said before, I connect fine but something is blocking any internet traffic. Please help.

Sounds like the WinSocks got scrambled...

in a RUN BOX, type netsh winsock reset catalog and if that does not help, then use an app called WinSock XP Fix...

good luck...

AOL probably messed something up. It usually does. Re-apply any service packs and run any and all Windows updates.

Sounds like it could be a DNS issue also. Have you tried manually configuring DNS's?

----------------------------------
Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.

Using a router? Maybe reset router.
Also start - run - CMD
type in ipconfig /registerdns

You could also try this:
[ol]
[li]Right-click "My Computer"[/li]
[li]Properties[/li]
[li]Hardware tab[/li]
[li]Device Manager button[/li]
[li]Find the network adapter, right-click and remove/delete[/li]
[li]Right-click on any remaining item after it's complete (assuming it didn't prompt for a restart), and select "search for new hardware" or "search for hardware changes"[/li]
[/ol]

The exact terminology may be a bit off, as I'm not looking at those screens right now - am not able to on my current work pc.

Oh, and what kind of connection are we talking about here for sure?
dial-up?
wired ethernet?
wireless ethernet?

If this is a DNS issue, one way to test this is to try going to a web site by its IP address. When there is a problem, I always: "What changed?" It seems obvious that the AOL garbage messed up something. Look for any files related to AOL and for anything in the Windows registry.

Don't forget the firewall - especially if you have a Symantec full system protection type of package isntalled. Try disabling it just long enough to see if you can get on the internet and then turn it back on or look for the problem if that is the cause. You can adjust the windows firewall from control panel - other software would likely have settings in its menu.

If all that don't work, you may need some coffee, Mountain Dew, Jolt, or some combination thereof. [wink]
