The past several years have been tough for me but I'm finally back on the Internet. I just bought a new Toshiba laptop and am trying to learn what it can do for me.

I have a wireless connection that goes to something called "alfonso". I guess I need "wireless for dummies". If some kind soul would give me some very basic education, I will be forever in your debt. My background was in Access database applications and I know absolutely nothing about Internet connections.

Is this wireless connection safe? How worried should I be? Are there settings I can change? I don't even know where to look on my computer. It seems pretty slow but the only description I can find when I look at "Properties" is "fair"; I don't see a specific speed. Is this an actual installed application that I can configure?

I'm not even sure I'm in the right forum. Please point me in the right direction.

It sounds like you are trying to link up to someone else's wireless network. If they have any clue, it should be secured and you will not be able to get on it. If it not secured, you still should not get on it. If this is your wireless networ (or one you are authorized to access), check with the person that set it up for the proper authentication information.

Thanks for the reply Dan. I did not purposely connect to anyone or anything. It was just there when I started this brand new computer so I'm assuming it's something that Toshiba loaded on my laptop. Maybe I should try the Toshiba website for guidance?

It sounds like the WiFi device in your laptop has just automatically detected a wireless network that's very local to you, e.g. in an upstairs flat, neighbour next door etc.

You need to get your own DSL connection to the Internet either via the telephone line or via cable. Depending upon your location, there are lots of companies willing to provide you with Broadband for a regular monthly payment.

Country and area you're in?

Roger, thanks for the explanation. It confirms what I learned today from my co-workers. I had a feeling that it was, if not illegal, at least unethical so I asked at work.

I'm in Las Vegas, NV, USA and will definitely get my own legal Internet connection. I used Cox before and was very satisfied with it. Embarq is offering a special on their DSL. I might try that out.

Thanks again.

Ann

Well, see if you can get any local recommendations regarding Embarq. Special offers and cheapest deals don't always work out best in the long run, particularly if you hit a problem or service is flaky. If Cox was good, then might be worth going with them again...

Some ISPs (Internet Service Providers) offer a free modem or modem/router to enable you to connect your computer to the telephone line or cable service, but watch the contract if they're trying to tie you in for months or years.

Hope that helps...

Roger, I took your advice and called Cox. I ordered 6mb service for $29.95/mo. I will buy the modem for $29.95 and they are going to deliver it to me tomorrow.

Thanks so much for holding my hand through this process. You gave me the confidence I needed. So, you can tell everyone that you definitely did your "good deed for the day".

Have a good one!

Ok Ann, thanks. Hope it all works out ok, but come back to the forum if you need further help.
