I'm new to Veritas and dont fully understand it yet and have a question.

What happens if you've been doing backups for a while and then something happens to the Veritas software and you have to reinstall it? How do you access the tapes because I would have thought that if you've uninstalled and reinstalled the software then the restore folders that were there (in the restore tab) before will have gone with the uninstall.

I think you have to go to the devices tab and catalogue the drive but i'm not sure. I tried this and it was successful but the file size was 0 bytes. I dont want to go deleting everything to run a test.

Any help much appreciated.

Simple task .... First off if you haven't installed the Veritas software yet, make sure that it is indeed installed onto the excat partition/drive that was installed earlier. After that is done all you have to do is open up Backup Exec and select the DEVICES tab, you should see your backup device with your server name beside the device drive. Insert the tape and right click the device drive(the one with your server name beside it) and select CATALOG. This will cause your device to read the entire media and catalog it into its CATALOG ..... hense the word catalog !!!!! And voila thats it, that should work without any problems.

thanks. thats what i thought but the 0 bytes thing confused me.

First perform an inventory when changing tapes , then a catalog :)

what do you mean, perform and inventory when changing tapes, then a catalogue? how do you perform an inventory? what on?

With the tape in the drive, go to the "Devices" tab in BE, and right-click on the icon for your tape device. You should see a menu with the options "Inventory" and "Catalog" in it. The inventory job, for a standalone drive, should only take a minute, but the Catalog can take hours, depending on the speed of your drive and the amount of data on the tape.

thanks. i'm only backing up a small 15 user network so it shouldnt take that long.
