I'm looking for a way to make a blur effect for an applet

the subject is descriptive - I'm looking for a way to make a blur effect for an applet.

What I have so far is a 3D array of points that appear to form a rotating sphere (just a bunch of trig, really). If I could find a way to blur them so they look more abstract and not as dorky.
