I'm currently a report specialist (I know SQL and Crystal Reports) and have experience doing ad-hoc reports against such databases as DB2, ACCESS, and Lotus Notes 4.6.

I want to become a DBA, I thought about studying for the SQL Server Cert that Microsoft has, but wouldn't I have to also take networking classes and get my MCSE? What steps do I have to take to become a DBA? Thanks.

Hey mr. Dog,

Don't make the mistake of thinking that if you know SQL, you are a DataBase Administrator. There's more to it.

SQL is just the base, a tool.

Big Mag is right...you might want to check local universities to see what courses they have. A SQL server cert would be a good step forward (I am a believer in certifications).

Check DICE.COM or other job web sites and see what kind of experience is required for DBA jobs.

Do some research...then plan ...then do.

If you have written SQL and been in a IT shop of more then 5 people, you know that being a DBA is also about data management, performance tuning, and database design. Quite a bit to it, but not impossible nor even difficult if thats what you want to do.

You might also want to see if their is a quasi dba role that you can fill right now or as you go along.

Hope this helps,

pivan In not now, when?
If not here, where?
If not us, who?

Just do it!!
