Illustrator won't start up for me

I hope someone can help me..
I'm running Windows XP with Adobe Creative Suite. Illustrator keeps giving me a problem with starting up.. The shortcuts don't work, and I just navigated to the actual program file and the error message is "Cannot perform selected operation", then shuts down; (Illustrator, not the computer).. I'm at a loss.. I have reinstalled this about 4 times since I got it (about 6 months ago).. Any help would be appreciated.

Are you on XP Pro and have you got admin rights on the PC?
