Illustrator - Invisible Work Area??!!

I have been using the Illustrator 10 tryout for a few weeks, then all of a sudden when I booted it up no work area appeared, just the tool bar. I didn't even get the top menu, with the file, edit, filter etc. tabs. So I upgraded to the full version of Illustrator 10 believing it was just a bug in the tryout but still get no work area or tabs! I've tried opening a saved file, but although the toolbar acts as if there is something there, there isn't!!! Please help asap, i'm in the middle of a project. I think it might be a conflict somewhere.

What are your system specs?...

Did you upgrade to the most recent version from Adobe.com? I think there have been two updates since 10 came out.
