Hello, this is probably really simple but it's frustrating me!

I am copying and pasting several eps logos into another eps document. All logos except one have pasted in absolutely fine. One of them however, when I press 'paste' a pop-up says 'Can't paste objects. The requested transformation would make some objects fall completely off the drawing area.'

I don't understand as all the logos are a similar size and I've even tried shrinking the original before I copy it. Why is this file different to the others?

Can anyone explain this to me?

I am trying to self-teach after a useless one-on-one course left me floundering and nobody else in my company has ever used Illustrator.

Instead of pasting, try the Place command on the File menu. You're usually best off only copying/pasting objects within the same program (like from one illustrator doc to another). You can also use the Open command in AI (file menu) to open the problem eps in a new AI document. Then see what it looks like. If ok, copy/paste that.

Thanks jmgalvin! I am using CS2 and I am copying and pasting (or trying to) from one AI doc to another. I have now placed the logo as you suggested but it means I cannot alter colours or elements of it. This is fine for this occasion but I just wonder why this sometimes happens...

It's so hard when there is nobody here to ask :0(

Do you also happen to know why when I save an AI document that is 'clipped' as a png/gif to upload to a html e-shot the image begins from where the edge of the bounding box (I think that's what it's called)is and not where the artboard begins? The image ends up placed in the wrong position and with a greyish border round it. I don't know how to delete the bit I have masked.

Thanks again, your help is much appreciated :0)

Hi Ralien,

>>>Can't paste objects. The requested transformation would make some objects fall completely off the drawing area.'<<<

...verify your origin points in both eps files, i imagine they differ, if you are pasting from one to the other using command/apple 'F' to paste in front this error message can often appear because of the differing origin points between the documents, command/apple 'C' ignores x and y axis values...

...resetting origin points is a case of double clicking the space in the far top left of your documents window, enable rulers to see it, command/apple 'R' or under the view menu...

...if placing eps files into a illustrator the default is to have them linked to the external document by default, turning the link option off (in the place dialogue) when choosing the file means it will be embedded instead, this makes it editable...

...you can embed already imported files in the links window flyout menu, (arrow top right of the palette), this will result with eps being a bit more editable...

...do note that this will result in various clipping masks being created, this may be a lot depending on the complexity of the embedded vector image...

...clipping and compound paths can be released using the 'object > clipping mask > release' and 'object > compound path > release' menu options. This however can be problematic if your not careful as releasing them can change the structure of the shapes they are creating...

When you place an AI eps it is editable as long as you don't check "link" on the place window. However, an eps can also contain bitmap (raster) data which would not be editable.

When you Save As or export from AI, only the artwork, not the page gets saved. To save the page as a whole image, draw an empty rectangle, with no stroke (border) to match the page & then export.

Have no idea what a gray border would be. Make sure that you have None selected for your stroke color on the image and in any html editor.
