Illustrator Graphics in Indesign make PDF HUGE?

I am importing Adobe Illustrator files and when I export to a PDF they are making my PDFs HUGE (2.23m)!
This is how I'm placing them into my document:
File-Place-& I select the desired graphic
When I export to a PDF I:
File-Print-Postscript File-Acrobat Distiller, Distiller setting are set at smallest file size
These HUGE files are making it very difficult for me to electronically forward my projects, most of the addressee's who try to print them get a message saying out of memory.
Am I missing something?

How big are the AI files? It is no surprise that the PDF is huge if the AI file is huge. Check that 'compress text and line art' is checked on the PDF export options. ...and it is best to export from InDesign, not print to PS and then distill.
